Utah’s job growth slows, unemployment rate up

Job growth in Utah slowed in April for the fourth consecutive month and the unemployment rate rose, suggesting the pace of the state’s economic recovery is wavering.
Employers created 25,200 jobs in the 12 months ending April 30 for a year-over-year increase of 2.1 percent, the Utah Department of Workforce Services said Friday, still much higher than the U.S. rate of 1.3 percent.

SLC ranks high as tech job hot spot

In yet another “best-of” list in Forbes, the business publication has named Salt Lake City the fourth-best city in the nation for technology jobs.
Citing such tech companies as Adobe, Electronic Arts and Twitter, the magazine and website stated Salt Lake City has become an attractive tech sector destination for its “lower taxes, more flexible regulatory environment, a well-educated, multilingual workforce and spectacular nearby natural amenities.”

Army opens jobs in combat battalions to women

Fort Campbell, Ky. • Female soldiers this week are moving into new jobs in once all-male units as the Army breaks down formal barriers in recognition of what has already happened in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Job market for Utah grads improving, but trouble persists

Ellen Stemle hopes to rewrite her love of literature into a rewarding career. Before you say “dream on,” consider that the University of Utah graduate wants to be an educator and is qualified to teach English as a second language.
